LLADRO ITEM # 01001597: “SOUTHERN TEA” “DAMAS EN LA CORTE SIGLO XVII” (“LAS MENINAS”) A very important and widely thought-after colossal Lladro sculpture portraying the four central personages in Diego Velazquez’s most famous painting, “Las Meninas”. Lladro # 01001597 is a limited signed edition of 1000. The sculpture offered here is number 65 of 1000. This Lladro has been sold out since 1995. It is exceptionally rare and extremely collectible. YEAR ISSUED: 1989 YEAR RETIRED: 1995 FINISH: Glazed HEIGHT: 10.25 in; 26.04 cm (without base) WIDTH: 19.76 in; 50.19 cm (without base) HEIGHT: 12.00 in; 30.48 cm (with base) WIDTH: 20.5 in; 52.00 cm (with base) SCULPTOR: José Puche DECORATOR: Angeles Cabo ORIGINAL LLADRO BASE: Included: Wood, painted in glossy grey (H 1.75 in; L 20.50 in) ORIGIN: Lladro City of Porcelain, Tavernes Blanques, Valencia, Spain CURRENT MARKET VALUE: $3,200.00 CONDITION: Excellent used condition. This sculpture has always been kept in a glass display case away from dust and sunlight. There are no chips, breaks or repairs. However, the finish on top of the wooden base has a few superficial scratches from normal use (please see pictures). These scratches do not show at all when you lay the sculpture on top of the base as the borders of the base are in perfect condition. LLADRO SHIPPING BOX: The original Lladro container is no longer available. PROVENANCE: I bought this sculpture new directly from Lladro in Valencia, Spain in 1992. HISTORICAL AND ARTISTIC SIGNIFICANCE OF THIS LLADRO In my opinion, this is one of the most important Lladro productions historically and artistically. This sculupture is a meticulously accurate three-dimensional rendition of a detail of the most famous and notable painting of El Prado Museum: Diego Velazquez’s Baroque masterpiece “La Familia de Felipe IV” (“Phillip IV’s Family”), commonly known as “Las Meninas” (see penultimate picture). Velazquez painted this tour de force in 1656 at the Alcázar de Madrid, today The Palacio Real, where the Spanish Habsburgs resided. Many scholars and artists have deemed “Las Meninas” as “the best painting in the Western world,” and regarded Velazquez as "possibly the greatest painter that ever lived” (Monet). Other notables unabashed in their admiration for Velazquez include Corot, Courbet, Whistler, Goya, Sargent, Millet, Degas, Renoir and Francis Bacon.
